.:97/365: The Flaming Crate Escape:.
I don’t think this one needs much explanation beyond the video, really. You’ve seen the crate escape during escapology month, and it’s definitely one of the best escapes of all time. This video, taken from the TV special “Finding Houdini”, was Penn and Teller’s very irreverent take on the classic, complete with black humor that just never fails to shock the audience before they laugh tentatively as a helpless man is sent to his apparent doom by the dastardly duo of Penn and Teller.
See, this is good comedy. It was the last thing you expected in the middle of them supposedly doing a tribute to Harry Houdini, and their deadpan reactions throughout the whole thing, as if it were perfectly normal what they were doing, is what really sold the whole routine.
I’m hard-pressed to find actual magic in this particular act, but I have to say that it was worth a laugh seeing people’s faces as the routine just unfolded from what was supposed to be a simple escapology act.
